OnePlus 3 Review

By  |

A day’s power in half an hour

With the first two efforts ending in near failure, the third try in the form of the OnePlus’ great experiment has turned out to be a success. In the process, it also proves that fine phones don’t have to cost the earth. In fact, the OnePlus 3 is truly amazing, an astonishing mobile device that is on a par with the high end phones. Unlike the previous OnePlus versions, there is no compromise here. It has designer good looks, NFC technology, fast-charging, and you can buy one without any pompous invites.

Summary

The OnePlus 3 boasts of a highly attractive design, excellent software, appreciable performance and value for money.  As to battery life, it isn’t so great as heavy users have to charge it every evening, although the video endurance is remarkably fine. However for its price, it is by far the finest mobile device you can buy at this price.

OnePlus 3 Design and Features

The OnePlus 3 has a 5.5” display, sports a glass and metal design, comes with a 7.4mm aluminum frame and is available in mute grey. Besides, it is a pleasure to hold and easy on the eyes. The back of the phone comes in anodized aluminum that imparts a matt finish to it, something you can see only on an iPhone. This unique phone is also unique in the sense that it has no memory card slot, for the simple reason that it has a whopping 64GB storage. The OnePlus 3 boasts of an excellent fingerprint scanner too, located below the display screen.

The Screen

The OnePlus 3 comes with the latest Super AMOLED Samsung screen. The previous versions had a few minor problems that are fixed in the present model. The screen is 5.5” across with an ample 1,920 x 1,080 pixels display with 401ppi pixel density. Sharpness is excellent and the black level is perfect. As with the Super AMOLED screens that came recently, viewing angles has become excellent, without significant decrease in brightness while viewing off-angle. As to outdoors visibility, it  could do with some improvement, as there is no changing color as well as contrast to suit high sunlight conditions like Samsung mobile phones.

Hardware

The OnePlus 3 always makes use of somewhat aggressive core hardware. This phone is equipped with the Snapdragon 820 CPU, that is also the core of the high end LG G5 and HTC 10. Although it may seem like any octa-core CPU, it is only quad-core, consisting of two performance as also lower-clocked cores each, using the 14nm Kyro core architecture. This is fundamentally more efficient as compared to the earlier Cortex-A57 cores, as used in Snapdragon 810. One good result of all this is that even while running demanding games, there is no appreciable warming.

Verdict

The OnePlus 3 boasts of a highly attractive design, excellent software, appreciable performance and value for money.  As to battery life, it isn’t so great as heavy users have to charge it every evening, although the video endurance is remarkably fine. However for its price, it is by far the finest mobile device you can buy at this price.
